When He is King was specially commissioned by The Warlock Singers, made possible by the generous gifts from supporters and members of The Warlock Singers, who have chosen to sponsor individual movements of the new work.
The choir has performed two of Matthew King's works, the evocative setting of the Song of Solomon, Arise my Love in May 2005 and a setting of the carol O Come, O Come Emmanuel which the Warlock Singers commissioned in 2005 and performed at the 2005 Christmas concerts.
When He is King takes its title from Peter Warlockâs Bethlehem Down, which forms the central movement of the work. It is a substantial work comprising a setting of the mass, interspersed with new arrangements of traditional Christmas carols, settings of poetry by Robert Herrick and a poem specially written for the piece by Alasdair Middleton. Matthew King has brought all these elements together in a very powerful work, seeking to portray the true meaning of the Christmas story.
